Scrapbook Camp is just around the corner. I’ve got 17 girls coming to scrapbook a whole album in just 5 days (one week). I know, I know… it seems insane. What am I thinking?! But with serious organization, it can be done.
Firstly, I’ve chosen the theme for the album. It’s crucial that the workshop be focussed on a theme album. Otherwise, you’ve got a room full of teenage girls doing whatever they want, no particular focus and you running around like a chicken with its head cut off. I speak from experience… no fun. And it’s even better if you choose the theme. Creating a theme album is a lot of fun, keeps the focus and allows the girls to really get into the journaling (an important aspect to scrapbooking).
Once again, though… pick the theme. That will keep the focus. The key word to running a workshop for teens is focus. Let’s say it together folks… FOCUS. Without the focus, you’ve got more than chaos, you’ve got the paper, glue and scissors hurricane from hell.
So, the theme I’ve chosen for camp is an ALL ABOUT ME album. It’s really ideal since the girls can take pics during the summer break and then come together to scrap them in an album that builds confidence, identity and self-esteem. And they’re having fun doing, too. I can’t think of a better theme!
I’ve notified all the participants as to which pics to bring to the first day of camp. Here’s the list:
- PIc of obssession or passion (size 5X7)
- Baby pic (less than three years of age) (size 5×7)
- Mom’s favorite pic of teen (size 5×7)
- Favorite pics of herself (3 -4 pics) (size 4×6 one of them 5×7)
- Wild or silly pic of herself (size 5×7)
- Pic of favorite friends (size 4×6)
- Pics of neighborhood/hometown (size 4×6 one of them 5×7)
- Pics of favorite places to go (3 – 4 pics) (size 4×6 one of them 5×7)
- Family shots (one pic of each family member and a pic of the whole family together) (size 4×6)
- Favorite event in life (size 4×6 one of them 5×7)
- Favorite b-day party (size 4×6 one of them 5×7)
- Pics of her bedroom (size 4×6 one of them 5×7)
- A pic of herself taken by herself (no one else can take this shot of her) (size 5×7)
Since a standard 12X12 album is 20 pages long, these pics should fill an entire book. Some pages will be double layouts and some not.
Make sure the girls know at what size the photos should be developed. Since I’m planning the actual layouts as well (part three of the this series), it’s important they know the sizes needed for the specific layouts. It all goes back to focus.
In layouts of multiple pics, it’s nice to give the girls the freedom to choose which pic they want to be the large pic. That means that pic was their favorite from the group of shots and that will be the focal point of the layout. Teaching focal point is an essential to learning the wonderful art/hobby of scrapbooking.
In Part 2 of this series, I will discuss the journalling involved in an ALL ABOUT ME album. It’s fun, confidence building and will add that unique one-of-a-kind touch to their album.
I have my mother’s scrap book from when she was a little girl and my own scrap book from when I was a kid. The idea of passing that tradition on again is so much fun.
You are a brave woman, my friend. Teenagers for 5 days and scrapbooking to boot. I just about collapsed after 3 hours with 10 girls several months ago. Very demanding in time and attention. Keep us posted! =)
I don’t think brave is a big enough word for a woman who is willing to take on a group of teenage girls for a week long scrapbooking camp. And there are two week long camps. Is someone providing a spa package (massage, pedicure, manicure, facial) at the end? It will be needed and deserved.
The book about me is a great idea. And this is the perfect method for spreading scrapbooking throughout Israel. Can’t teenagers text message at 1000km per hour? And the more they text message about scrapbooking, the more your happy business grows.
If there is any possible way to post pictures of your workshop your website, I would be tickled to see them. Fun, fun, fun!
Oh, and your cost for a week long camp plus the supplies is really reasonable especially for all the planning and organizing that you will do beforehand. Maybe there are some lovely helpful scrapbookers who are serving you by helping you with all this preparation? Hint, hint to those of you talented souls who actually live in Israel?
Happy Scrapbooking All!!
The clock is just rolling over to Sunday here and I am going to bed. Some of you are just getting up and getting ready to start your crazy week of scrapbooking camp. I hope that it is great fun. I can’t wait to hear the updates. Be well and enjoy the experience. Crop, Paper, Scissors…..go!
